Lyoto Machida Vs. Mauricio Rua UFC

With the hype behind UFC 100 finally behind us, it's time to take a look at the UFC 101 preview and predictions. UFC 101 is going to be held on Saturday, August 8th from the Wachovia Center in Philadelphia.

The headline bout for the UFC 101 card is lightweight champion BJ Penn against Kenny Florian and the co-feature is an exciting battle between pound for pound king and middleweight champion Anderson Silva against former light heavyweight champion and fan favorite Forrest Griffin.

And by the way, I was 4-0 with my UFC 100 Predictions. So without further adieu, here's a look at the main bouts on the UFC 101 card and a complete set of UFC 101 predictions.

UFC 101 Preview and Predictions - BJ Penn vs. Kenny Florian

To me, Kenny Florian is one of the fighters who was chosen by Dana White to be "the one" long before he earned anything in the ring. The facts are, he has consistently been matched lightly, and his previous step-up bout against Sean Sherk was a loss. He has improved a great deal since then, as his performances over Joe Stevenson and Roger Huerta have showed and he deserves credit for that. However, there isn't much that I would say he does better than BJ Penn.

Penn isn't going to let himself be elbowed while pinned down on the mat against a fellow lightweight fighter. He isn't going to be submitted by Florian and Penn's stand up game is smooth, accurate and ferocious. The only question in this fight for me is if Penn has been made hungry by the loss against St. Pierre, or if he is distracted by the perceived injustices he suffered from in that fight.

BJ Penn vs. Kenny Florian Prediction: Penn retains lightweight champion via fourth round TKO

UFC 101 Preview and Predictions - Anderson Silva vs. Forrest Griffin

Anderson Silva is climbing once again to the 205 pound light heavyweight division. This time, he will be facing much tougher competition when he squares off against former light heavyweight champion Forrest Griffin. As opposed to what some other people think, I think Griffin is a very live underdog in this match. He has pulled off the huge upset before, most notably against Mauricio Rua but also in his title winning effort against Quinton Rampage Jackson.

The complaints leveled upon Anderson Silva though have been ridiculous. His wins have become so routine and he ran through the top competition at middleweight so quickly, that people have become bothered when they don't see the spectacular from him. Unfortunately for Forrest, I think Silva is sufficiently bothered by the criticism to really want to go after Griffin and put on a show. Griffin's leg kicks are no match for Silva's overall offensive attack, and eventually he'll have had too much.

Anderson Silva vs. Forrest Griffin Prediction: Silva wins via third round TKO

UFC 101 Preview and Predictions - Kendall Grove vs. Ricardo Almeida

Kendall Grove is back to his winning ways, with two consecutive victories after being stopped in two straight bouts. Ricardo Almeida is really looking to kick his comeback into gear by stopping a fan favorite - Grove won the Ultimate Fighter - and making some noise in the middleweight division. Grove's size and length certainly gives him the advantage in the striking game, but I think he will be overwhelmed by the strength of Almeida should they make it to the ground. Almeida won't look great, but he'll get the job done.

Kendall Grove vs. Ricardo Almeida prediction: Almeida wins via split decision

UFC 101 Preview and Predictions - Josh Neer vs. Kurt Pellegrino

Both of these men have been on the rebound trail since losing to Nate Diaz. Josh Neer's UFC career has been rocky, with only a 4-4 record, however it's been filled with fights against top opposition, including the likes of Drew Fickett, Joe Stevenson, Josh Burkman and both Nick and Nate Diaz. Pellegrino has faced many of the same names, including Nate Diaz, Stevenson, Fickett and Mac Danzig.

While Neer has gotten all of his UFC victories via submission, I think Pellegrino has the clear advantage in jiu-jitsu. Neer will have the advantage in striking, although I don't think he will be able to hurt Pellegrino that easily. If Pellegrino takes Neer down expect him to have the advantage and if Neer gets on top of Pellegrino, expect him to have the edge with the damage he inflicts. This fight is a toss up that could go either way.

Josh Neer vs. Kurt Pellegrino prediction: Pellegrino wins via submission

That wraps it up for my UFC 101 preview and predictions. Also on the card is Ultimate Fighter winner Amir Sadalloh against fellow undefeated fighter Johny Hendricks, and Thales Leites vs. Alessio Sakara in a very intriguing middleweight battle.
